The City of Urbandale is considering updates to its City Code to address the growing use of electric bikes, scooters, electric dirt bikes and other personal transportation devices. The proposed ordinance would expand the City’s existing bicycle regulations so they apply to a broader range of devices. Rather than relying on product names—which can vary by manufacturer—the proposed rules would use motor size to determine where a device may be operated.
What Is Being Proposed?
Under the proposed ordinance, a 750-watt standard would create a clear and enforceable rule, align more closely with neighboring metro communities, and give parents a simple way to understand which devices are appropriate for their children to ride on sidewalks and trails. The City Council is considering related updates to Chapter 75 of the City Code.
